Directed by Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Holmes,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”), who brings his singular aptitude for quick-paced, visceral motion to the fictional port metropolis of Agrabah, “Aladdin” is written by John August (“Dark Shadows,” “Big Fish”) and Ritchie primarily based on Disney’s “Aladdin.” The movie stars Will Smith (“Ali,” “Men in Black”) because the bigger-than-life Genie; Mena Massoud (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) because the charming scoundrel Aladdin; Naomi Scott (“Power Rangers”) as Jasmine, the attractive, self-decided princess; Marwan Kenzari (“Murder on the Orient Express”) as Jafar, the highly effective sorcerer; Navid Negahban (“Legion”) because the Sultan involved along with his daughter’s future; Nasim Pedrad (“Saturday Night Live”) as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited greatest buddy and confidante; Billy Magnussen (“Into the Woods”) because the good-looking and boastful suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar (“The Great Wall”) as Hakim, Jafar’s proper-hand man and captain of the palace guards.
